Patrick Biestman April 8, 2017

On windy days such as been the case the first two days of this years Master's, it can make me somewhat wistful when it comes to the idea of a photography studio. Through the years I have come across several spaces that have suddenly come available, or in terms of downtown Augusta, spaces that have been vacant for many years, and stood outside of the door, checked every window, checked certain apps on my phone to see when and where the sun rises or sets in relation to those windows and dreamt of what could be.  Enterprise Mill, the White building, that secret room in the Miller Theatre, large, small, and everything in between. I think Rachel has heard the phrase "I think I found it" so many times, well, at this point it has gone beyond any sort of response, even the "yes dear."

mackenzie1.jpg mackenzie2.jpg mackenzie3.jpg mackenzie5.jpg mackenzie6.jpg mackenzie7.jpg mackenzie8.jpg mackenzie10.jpg mackenzie11.jpg mackenzie12.jpg mackenzie13.jpg mackenzie14.jpg mackenzie16.jpg mackenzie17.jpg mackenzie18.jpg mackenzie19.jpg mackenzie20.jpg mackenzie21.jpg mackenzie23.jpg mackenzie24.jpg mackenzie25.jpg mackenzie27.jpg mackenzie28.jpg mackenzie29.jpg

The moment that I decided I wanted a building to call my own was solidified when I saw the movie Smoke. There is a scene where Harvey Keitel's character is shown taking a picture of his storefront , an act that he has religiously executed every day that he has been open. One single picture, every morning before he opens for business, capturing the passage of time and people as the day unfolds to be catalogued, revisited, and remembered. That, and a somewhat perverse joy I would garner from sweeping in front of the entrance have lit a fire in me to someday own a studio of my own.

The problem outside of the obvious cost and all of that jazz, is I don't how much I would use it. A studio for the sole purpose of photography is wonderful, don't get me wrong, but to look at the same walls again and again as a backdrop would get tedious. I could purchase different backdrops, make different backdrops (that would be fun), and I have even looked into taking some sort of theatre class for set design and building, but then that is an altogether different path I do not have the time for with a wife, children, and developing business. Or to put it in another simpler way, safe. I am not trying to knock those that do have studio, far from that.  I am truly envious that they have a professional environment in which to consistently engage their clients with a consistent lighting and weather environment. Being beholden to Mother Nature in Augusta is not a stress free way to schedule a photo session in which your client is doing their best not to melt in the heat or your wife is doing her best to apply makeup when her fingers don't want to work. All of which leads me to this photo session you have been scrolling through as reading this, our Senior session with the lovely Mackenzie.

mackenzie30.jpg mackenzie31.jpg mackenzie32.jpg mackenzie33.jpg mackenzie34.jpg mackenzie35.jpg mackenzie36.jpg mackenzie38.jpg mackenzie39.jpg mackenzie40.jpg mackenzie41.jpg

If you could not tell by my writing alone, I have some form of attention deficit thingy.  My mind is always going, and the way that it has manifested itself over the years is the development of what I like to call my "mental camera." Everyone and everything is subject to the whims of this mental camera that saw it's formative years in my adolescence with Sports Illustrated and National Geographic and later on in what I call my "Charleston Internship." Without going too far down that path, as it is a subject for another blog, those experiences taught me that there are stories everywhere waiting to be told and that most often if you look beyond (or behind in the case of Charleston) the facades there are "sets" or backdrops everywhere if you are willing to see them. Or "slow down" shall we say to discover them.

Mackenzie getting prepped and ready with a wardrobe change, makeup touch-up and revamped hair by Rachel. A standard practice with every portrait session.

What you have seen here with Mackenzie are area's that some of you pass by every day.  We started at the grassy field across from the Lady Antebellum Amphitheater that once was used for overflow event parking, golfers practicing their swings, drone pilots practicing their skills, and every once and awhile young kids learning to ride their first dirt bikes.  Unfortunately, that source of community coming together is now being transformed into some outdoor shopping center. The next spot was the retaining wall and immediate surroundings behind the Lady A and the Kroger. Finishing up the session we utilized the building and parking lot of the Health Center Credit Union next door.

mackenzie43.jpg mackenzie45.jpg mackenzie47.jpg mackenzie48.jpg mackenzie49.jpg mackenzie50.jpg mackenzie52.jpg mackenzie53.jpg mackenzie54.jpg mackenzie55.jpg mackenzie56.jpg mackenzie58.jpg mackenzie60.jpg

This is the life of a natural light photographer without a studio who does his best to not repeat and reuse the same locations over and over and over (looking at you photographers who use that damn train depot downtown). Sure it takes work, there is a lot of slow driving and constant stopping, sorry for those of you who are unlucky enough to be behind me when I am on the "hunt." But it takes me out of my safe zone, forces me to be truly present in the moment with a client and prevents me from just going through the motions and placing my clients in the same positions and poses as the ones before. Regardless of the backdrop, the point of what I do is to capture the beauty of my client, the outward and most importantly the inner beauty.  And that can happen anywhere, because you bring that beauty with you wherever I place you. I just want to make the pictures as unique as you are.  And what better way to show you that thought process than with Mackenzie.  She nailed it, I just happened to be the one that captured it.

a single shot senior session with meg

It’s been a little while, but then again, if you have followed this blog for years, this tends to be the cycle. Now that we have entered a bit of a break between busy cycles it’s time to deluge everyone with what we have been up to. So let us start this journey off with a bang and recap our senior journey with the wonderful Meg. This is not the first go round with this family as Rachel and I had the opportunity to work with her sister, Katie for her senior session downtown. This time however, we took Meg on a little trip through Evans visiting the usual sites of urgent care parking decks, dentist parking lots, behind a strip mall, gator pond, and old warehouse parking lots. You know, Evans’ finest.

Please enjoy our journey below, and as always, hair and makeup provided by Rachel Biestman.

In our natural state, we generally like the long form photography session, what we call our Single Shot Session, spread out over a couple of hours, leisurely walking or taking short trips to various sites, wardrobe and hair changes, yada, yada, yada. But 4 hours of time when you include hair, makeup, and travel is not always a luxury people can afford, especially for Senior photography where said senior has a multitude of activities and responsibilities demanding their time. Which leads us to our quick, down and dirty Half Shot Session available for any our portrait sessions.

And this is the beautiful Ms. Calla, a senior we are honored to have had the opportunity to take on a little jaunt along the roads of Evans for her senior session. A little mix of some familiar locations remixed a bit with some new “we’re taking pictures where?” locations. And without further ado, we’ll jump into what has become somewhat of a launchpad location for me, the backside of our local gym. It has turned out to be a convenient location for that first 15 minutes where we get to know each other and what it feels like to have a camera thrust into your face and I get to see how the reaction. But if you will note, we got a few new angles and vistas thrown in at the end as it can be a versatile little space.

a half shot session: senior style with cannon
a half shot session: senior style with cannon

A quick and well, not dirty, but wet mini senior session with the wonderfully affable Cannon. The mini session is not for everyone.  It is quick paced, and we get the party rolling right from the get go because we run it for 45 minutes versus our long form 2 hour session.  The first 15 minutes or so of a full session is just for our client to get their bearings and relax and be themselves versus the robotic smile for pictures which can dominate once I bring the camera up.  With a mini session, we have to start that way from the start. But the thing I kept hearing from Cannon's mom Amanada during our phone consultation was his laid back demeanor. And she spoke the truth.  It was an easy session to groove into and it was an absolute joy to shoot. Best of luck to Cannon in all of his future endeavors, in particular his ability to lead a lacrosse team to victory in goal, he has the right mental attitude to succeed wherever he plies his trade.

my year in the miller theater, volume 4
my year in the miller theater, volume 4

This week in The Miller brings us a bit of color and texture shot from the roof, focusing on the surrounding environment of buildings and skyline of downtown Augusta and it's unique mix of brick, sculpture, peeling paint, and rust.  We follow that up with a little tour back inside featuring some of the unique fixtures and textures of The Miller, also the ubiquitous front stairwell and finishing with some sunset shots from the roof.  This volume's portrait session is a Senior Session featuring Emily introducing the back alley and the room under the secret yellow room room and getting her own time on the roof while joining the "just like a tree stand" club when presented with the many ladders on the roof.

portrait photography and patience, the katie session
portrait photography and patience, the katie session

For those of you in the know, it is Championship Sunday as I write this and one of the biggest story lines of the playoffs has been Le'Veon Bell and his unique running style.  If you happen to be around the t.v. while the Steelers are on today, take a listen and see if you can count the number of times you here the word "patience" in reference to Mr. Bell.  Please don't make a drinking game out of it, because with Phil Simm's behind the mic, it will be every other word out of his mouth when the Steelers have the ball and you would be well on your way to being toasted by the end of the 1st quarter.  But outside of that digression, Mr. Bell truly does have a unique way of running with patience and if I may be so bold, I am going to use him and his style as my segue into this lovely Senior Session with Katie.

Senior Photography in Evans GA: Alissa

Twenty years ago I entered my senior year in high school. I had just come home from a summer in Ecuador, and I had shoulder length blonde hair that I was devising a plan to cut into a pixy (do I sleep with gum? Do I just lie? My parents would never let me do it). I had gained a solid 10 or 15 lbs. that summer to add to the several I already possessed overweight. Heroin chic I was not, but maybe I could go skater/raver/punk. The girls at school already didn't quite get me, so who would care?

That year I clad myself in funky vintage sweaters and JNCO. I lied to cut off my hair, and desperately searched out an identity that wasn't entirely centered on singing. I didn't think I was able to be who I desperately wanted to be, so I had to find an alternative.

Portrait Photography In Evans, GA: Rebekah
Portrait Photography In Evans, GA: Rebekah

I had barely spoken to her before, but I was desperate to set up a shoot with her. I pass her often in church, a place that is one of her favorites. Her usual attire begins with a t-shirt and a loose bun, ready to hit the volleyball court or wrestle a gaggle of 3 year olds.

Upon asking her to shoot, it didn't occur to me that she had never modeled before. Meters tall, porcelain skin, and hair for days; in a model-starved town like Augusta, I assumed she was inundated with requests.

Regardless of her future in the fashion industry, we thoroughly value our time with this understated beauty.

Rachel and I love are jobs for a multitude of reasons, many of which we have expressed in previous posts here on the blog.  One reason, while not explicitly stated yet we hope has come across in our words, is that we get to work with and spend time with some pretty awesome people who come from a myriad of backgrounds.  Compound this with the fact that Augusta is not known for it's always pleasant weather and my penchant to disregard said conditions (much to Rachel's hair and make-up artistry chagrin), we would like to introduce you to Kallen, our latest senior portrait session and young woman extraordinaire.

Augusta GA Senior Portraits: Beauty that abides
Augusta GA Senior Portraits: Beauty that abides

Senior portraiture has evolved and devolved since my moments in front of the camera in 1996. From glaring props, arty silhouettes, and girls in tall grass and floral crowns; senior portraits are now whatever a 17 year old wishes them to be. In this case, we simply did what we do. No pom poms or drapes; just a girl in her youth. Flawless skin, radiant hair, and an exceptional location were the only "props" in play. We desire a result that will not mortify as a #tbt in 15 years. We desire images of the abiding beauty we will carry to generations that follow.

Augusta GA Senior Portraits: on a misty monday
Augusta GA Senior Portraits: on a misty monday

On a misty Monday a few weeks ago, we met Emily at a barn in Harlem, GA.

I am embarrassed to say that prior to this afternoon, my only experiences with horses were on a trail ride in Tanglewood Park at age 10. and a pretty extensive "My Little Pony" collection. Besides sitting in school and trying to determine which girls rode horses based on the unruliness of their pony tails, I never gave anything equine a second thought. Horses can be massive, and I was small. I was afraid to fall off of one, and lets not forget that they are outside (which I never really cared for, anyway).
